BMO Field Rennovations

A new roof for Toronto FC

Press articles:

Structural design of renovations to the existing BMO Stadium, home of the Toronto FC MLS soccer team. Works included the addition of a new upper seating bowl to the East Stand and the addition of canopies on three sides. Other items included upgrades and modifications to the existing bowls concourses, hospitality and concessions. The typical capacity of the stadium was increased from under 22,000 to 30,000.

The works had to take place between seasons and the existing playing surface had to be maintained throughout the process. This limited the viable construction options for the roof and guided the design team to long span, tapering, triangulated trusses supporting cantilevering plate girders. The trusses are supported in the corners of the ground by moment frame towers constructed of large diameter pipe columns and built up box cross beams. The south most canopy is fully supported by its truss with no rear columns. This allows for additional seating to be erected to the rear for larger events.
