Abbot Kinney Renovation
Location / Los Angeles, California
Architect / Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
Size / c.3,700 SF
Status / Completed 2019
The renovation of a 1913 unreinforced masonry building to remove interior columns, add skylights and reopen a storefront façade previously filled in as part of an earlier retrofit.
WORKPOINT engineering helped to give a new lease of life to this corner store on Abbot Kinney in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles. The building had undergone a previous retrofit that infilled half the building frontage with a reinforced concrete wall. We replaced the wall with a steel moment frame and capitalized on the new structure by using it to support a new long span beam, allowing us to demolish the interior columns in the front of store space. New skylights brought additional light into key areas of the building.
