AARON MILKEN CENTER

location: Los Angeles, CA

architect: Abramson Architects

status: In Construction

A new 20,000-square-foot early learning center attached to Stephen Wise Temple in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, the project features a sprawling reinforced concrete podium supporting extensive raised exterior gardens, walkways, and learning areas. Second-floor classrooms are framed from metal stud.

A two-story space-frame canopy spans the central entry walkway, cantilevering in four directions. WORKPOINT engineering developed a conceptual construction sequencing and connection strategy early in the project schedule to demonstrate the feasibility and economy of this unique structure.

The hillside location also necessitated a new perimeter retaining wall. To facilitate an economic construction, the design of the wall incorporated piles at regular centers that extend up as hidden pilasters.
